The Tutors
The course is fortunate in having in addition to a number of talented helpers, a faculty of highly qualified coaches who are talented, supportive and well respected in their fields.
Among these are:
Gordon Back (Piano) is one of Britain's foremost pianists and an acclaimed recording artist. He is also Artistic Director of the Menhuin Competition.
Violinist David Frühwirth (Violin) is a highly experienced chamber musician who lives and teaches in Munich. Students can benefit from his Central European training and his infectious energy in both instrumental and orchestral sessions. In the evenings he and other coaches participate in informal music making - repertoire such as the Bach Double and Vivaldi Concertos, and String Serenades.
Colin Howard (Choir, Orchestra) has been a pillar of NCMC for 30 years. He provides an
inspirational presence. His innovative morning choir practise in particular is hugely popular with students and staff.
Graham Waterhouse (Cello, Composition) is the composer in residence, and can offer advice on students' compositions; there is also the possibility to have them played through and to have them performed during the course.
Celia Waterhouse (Violin) plays with the first violins in the BBCSO and combines this with a busy life leading two chamber orchestras and teaching violin in SW London and
on music courses in the UK and Germany.
Caroline Ichynose (Viola) in addition to tutoring, is instrumental in auditioning and organising quartet groups.
Joe Ichynose (Viola) has been associated with
the course for many years, first as a student
and now as a tutor.
Lee Warren (Performance Skills) has a number
of roles at the course. His main activity is in
teaching performance skills. He is an
Alexander Technique teacher, a Member of
the Magic Circle and chief organiser of the
week's cabaret.
Elisabeth Waterhouse (Violin) founder of
the course, is a pianist, Alexander Technique
teacher, and teaches the violin in North London. Elisabeth is also the founder of the
TDSS Suzuki Course for younger players, a course that has also been running for
29 years (the first Suzuki Camp in the UK) and takes place at this venue in the week following NCMC.
